Independent Platforms
These are online communities that are hosted on their own platform, and not a part of a social network like Reddit/Facebook/LinkedIn, or communication platform like Slack and Discord. Although they may utilize community software like circle.so to implement the features of their community, they have their own brand and identity.
Reddit communities (or "subreddits") are forum-based groups on the popular social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website Reddit. Reddit is commonly known as "the front page of the internet". Users submit content to the site such as links, text posts, and images, which are then voted up or down and discussed by other members. From investing Reddit communities, to professional ones, to ones just for laughs, you're likely to find a community for you on Reddit.
Discord
Discord is an American VoIP, instant messaging and digital distribution platform designed for creating communities. Users communicate with voice calls, video calls, text messaging, media and files in private chats or as part of communities called "servers". Discord originally became popular in the gaming communities, but now has spread to software developers, crypto, and beyond.
Facebook(or Meta) builds technologies that give people the power to connect with friends and family, find communities and grow businesses. Facebook groups are a place to communicate about shared interests with certain people. You can create a group for anything — your family reunion, your after-work sports team or your book club. Slack is a business communication platform which offers many realtime chat features, including persistent chat rooms (channels) organized by topic, private groups, and direct messaging. LinkedIn Groups provide a place for professionals in the same industry or with similar interests to share their insights and experiences, ask for guidance, and build valuable connections.

X / Twitter
Twitter (recently renamed to X) is an American microblogging and social networking service on which users post and interact with messages known as "tweets". Registered users can post, like and retweet tweets, but unregistered users can only read them. Twitter had a community feature where user's tweets in a group are aggregated in one place, and are read-only to people outside of the community. However, they are discontinuing the communities feature as it was not used enough :(

Circle is an all-in-one community platform. Discussions are organized into dedicated spaces, and allow for both forum-based and chat-based communications. Additionally, Circle enables live-stream events directly in the application.
